ABC (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence)
1. Recording an ABC
Open a new ABC form by opening the side navigation bar and clicking “+ABC”
Choose a patient
Populate the form with:
Time of behaviour
Behaviour types
Severity (of the behaviour, in your opinion)
Triggers immediately beforehand (events happening on the lead-up to the behaviour that might have triggered it)
Calming factors (events that seemed to put a stop to the behaviour)
Restraint techniques used (normally used as a last resort)
Personal factors (anything you think the patient might’ve been feeling or trying to communicate through the behaviour)
Locations (any areas this behaviour occurred in)
Environmental factors (anything going on around them that might’ve contributed to the behaviour)
People present (anyone nearby that might’ve witnessed the behaviour)
Other comments (any other details that might increase understanding of this behaviour and help prevent it in future)
Click “Submit“
2. Analysing the data
Behaviour over time graph
Severity (mean) line shows the mean severity of submissions in each period (where the four severities (Absent/near miss, Low, Moderate, Severe) score 1 to 4 respectively. For each period they’re all added together and divided by the total submission count.
Frequency line shows how many ABCs were recorded in each period
Use of restraint line shows how many ABCs included at least one answer selected to the restraint question in the form
Granularity dropdown sets how many datapoints show in the chart
Key events button allows you to annotate timestamps on the graph. This can be useful to highlight how changes in care affect the behavioural lines.
